Did you know that a study done by Campus Renewal out of Austin Texas estimates that between 60% and 80% of Christian students leaving for college also leave their Faith behind? That means that about 3 out of every 4 young Christians leave their Faith behind before college.

Another study conducted by well respected pollster George Barna, including 22,000 adults and 2,000 teenagers, over 25 separate surveys, found more in depth data, and it doesn't get better.

Barna found that out of all of the subjects in their 20's, that attended church when they were younger but do not now:

  • 95% regularly attended church while they were in elementary & middle school.
  • 55% regularly attended church while they were in high school.
  • Only 11% were still regularly attending church during college (and left the church after college).

That means that 90% of young Christians that left the church did so before even making it to college.

Further confirmation of this alarming trend comes from data from the Pew Research Free Republic, that found that 70%-75% of Christian youth leave the church after high school.

For the young Christians who do make it into college, while still attending church, life is not made easy. College professors are five times more likely to identify themselves as atheists than the general public. Christian students are not equipped to resist rabidly anti-Christian college professors who are intent on converting their students to atheism. And the alarming reality is that the self-proclaimed "New Atheists", who believe that Christianity is a hinderance to the technological advancement of humanity, are writing books and are growing in popularity in college campuses.

And these pressures are not just experienced in college. In today's world, these same pressures are hitting young Christians earlier and earlier, in Jr. High and High School levels.

In light of all this, is it any wonder that young Christians give up their Faith to avoid the ridicule of their peers? They loose their confidence in Scripture. They loose the confidence to follow God.

So what effect does loosing confidence in the authority of God's word have?

Diving deeper into Barna's Study, we find that:

  • 77% of people surveyed believe in world-wide flood.
  • 75% of people surveyed believe in Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
  • 62% of people surveyed believe Abraham fathered Isaac when he was 100 yrs old.
  • 60% of people surveyed believe in the Tower of Babel.
  • But only 20% of people surveyed believe the earth is less than 10,000 years old.

What does this data tell us? It tells us that most people can't accept the very beginning of Biblical Scripture. If people are unable to trust in the very first story in the Bible, why then should they accept any later story in the Bible. With the Bible discredited right from the start, people are left to pick and choose what parts of Scripture to believe.

In Barna's Study, 82% of those who said that they do not believe that all of the stories in the Bible are true and accurate did so because of doubts about the authority of the Bible.

This is the pandemic level problem that the Truth of Origins Ministries is trying to stop.

A Lifeway Research Survey took a look at 9 of the most common reasons why young Christians claim they left the church. Some Christians gave more than one reason:

  1. I moved to college and stopped attending church 34%
  2. Church members seemed judgmental or hypocritical 32%
  3. I didn't feel connected to people in my church 29%
  4. I disagreed with the church's stance on political/social.... 25%
  5. My work responsibilities prevented me from attending 24%
  6. I never connected with students in the student.... 23%
  7. I simply wanted a break from church 23%
  8. I was only going to church to please others 22%
  9. I moved too far away from the church to attend 22%

What do all of these reasons have in common? They are all focused on the individual being surveyed, or on how others treat them. These are/were Christians who are focused on the things of this world, and not on God. They have lost their Faith in the authority of God's Word and have thus lost their correct focus.

So What is the Truth of Origins Ministries Doing to Combat This?

Imagine if young Christians could received support for their Faith in the Genesis Creation model during their Jr. High, High School and College years. What if during their time in Jr. High, High School and College, young Christians were not just told that God's Word is Infallible Truth, but were also shown the catastrophic inconsistencies of the secular model that the schools falsely teach as truth. If the data from all of the examples above is accurate, then supporting young Christian's Faith in the first story of the Bible will help to secure the authority of all other stories of the Bible.

This is the aim of the Truth of Origins Ministries. To deconstruct secular misconceptions and rebuild and/or defend Creation Truths. We seek to do this through presentations, private tutoring, classroom workshops and camps for Jr. High, High School and College age students. We further offer these learning options to the parents, grandparents, guardians and concerned family members of Jr. High, High School and College age students.
